Your Partner During Pregnancy

Although almost all of the attention during a pregnancy is on the mother and her unborn child, there is most often a very important third person in pregnancy: that is the father or partner of the baby. Remember that they too are going through a myriad of changes as your pregnancy progresses.

Here are some tips to make your partner feel more connected during pregnancy:

  • Take some time to ask them about their feelings during the pregnancy, and what concerns they may have after baby is born

  • If possible, include them in your maternal health consultations

  • Encourage friends that have had a baby to communicate and share their experiences and challenges with your partner

  • Ensure they are given the opportunity to cuddle, hold and talk to baby immediately after birth

  • Encourage new dads/partners to help bathe, clothe and soothe your newborn
